Backroad Arts

So much of life happens on backroads. For followers of Jesus, our home is in Heaven. Our journey home can feel like a winding backroad - filled with brokenness, joy, trouble, and beauty. My art reflects that faith journey, and my personal journey traveling many backroads around the world.

I Haven't Been Everywhere

I love traveling the world. I would love to visit every country, or at least as many as possible. So one of my favorite quotes is, "I haven't been everywhere, but it's on my list. There are many more backroads to explore!

02

This World is Upside Down

There is so much brokenness in this life. Ever since evil broke in, this world has been upside down. Thus, many of the roads we walk are broken and lined with trouble. In this drawing, I have depicted the globe as literally upside down.

United States Coat of Arms

For a project, I drew symbols of countries I've spent time in. I grew up in the United States, and have wandered many backroads there. Please keep the United States in your prayers.

Turkish Coat of Arms

For a project, I drew symbols of countries I've spent time in. It's been many years since I visited Türkiye (then know as Turkey), but it's still a special place in my heart. My favorite part was playing with the neighborhood children in the alleyway behind a church in Diyarbakır. Please keep Türkiye in your prayers.

Israel Coat of Arms

For a project, I drew symbols of countries I've spent time in. In college, I got to spend six weeks in Israel, traveling the incredibly steep roads of Nazareth and the rest of Galilee. Before leaving, I had one day in Jerusalem and Bethlehem (in the West Bank). Please keep Israel/Gaza/the West Bank in your prayers.

Kenyan Coat of Arms

For a project, I drew symbols of countries I've spent time in. My missionary training was done in Kenya, and I still often travel there. That training was special because I was with students from all over East & Central Africa. Please keep Kenya and the rest of the region in your prayers.

Ugandan Crest

For a project, I drew symbols of countries I've spent time in. Uganda is where I currently live and serve. The crested crane is the national bird of Uganda. People often use it as a lesson in knowing your value. As the national bird, the crested crane is highly protected and is an important symbol, yet it lives in swamps, so people says that the crested crane does not know its value. Please keep Uganda in your prayers.

Rose Background

Being named Rose, I always enjoy doodling roses. I drew a rose background, and did a series of encouraging words and phrases on it. I hope they bring you joy.

Romans Word Art

I love henna style artwork. I also love using word art. So I took some of the beautiful Gospel explanation from Romans, especially chapter three and chapter five, and used the words to create a henna-style floral design.

Woodland Joy

This is actually a drawing I made of a character for D&D, but it's also a fun illustration of the joy of nature and especially the woods. Forests have always been happy places for me. When I was going through a difficult time living outside of Chicago, I discovered a nearby forest preserve. I would go there after church and wander the woods taking photos, and it encouraged me during a difficult time.

I Will Follow

“Follow Me,” He told them, “and I will make you fish for people!”

- Matthew 4:19 (HCSB)

Nativity

I love Christmas! It's always been one of my favorite times of the year. I wanted to draw an illustration of the nativity scene looking at the back of Mary and Joseph, so that you see them focused on baby Jesus.

If you're in a Christmas mood, check out the poem I wrote as a medley of Christmas songs.

On My Way Home

Once I read a quote that said, "I was born very far from where I belong, so I guess you could say, I'm on my way home." (It seems to be a paraphrase of a quote from Bob Dylan) I thought of the idea of how, as Christians, Heaven is our home. We live in this world, but don't belong here. I guess you could say, I'm on my way Home.

Eye On Chicago

Chicago became a very special place to my heart, and there are days I really miss it. I saw an idea online one time of drawing a cityscape inside someone's eye, so I drew the Chicago skyline in my eye.

Esther

When I was in Israel, I saw a Hebrew art technique that uses words, especially Bible verses, to create illustrations. I did this drawing of Esther using English text from the book of Esther for a little girl named Esther in Uganda.
